What I’m reviewing here though is the recent re-release of this game on Steam (which is, by the way, top-notch and much more compelling than most of the re-releases that have been out there, with extra saving features and some neat graphic enhancements). This would convert both games into a single, complete game with a cohesive storyline and the added extra of playing the entire game as the ever cool Knuckles the Echidna. While both games could be played separately and each contained their own set of levels, owning both of them allowed the player to “lock-on”, that is, to fit the Sonic 3 cartridge inside the S&K one. The first one being Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and then the “expansion” Sonic & Knuckles. This game was never sold originally as a full one, but instead was split into two cartridges for the old Sega Mega Drive (Sega Genesis in the US). ![]() No sir! Sonic has definitely seen better days, and in this post I would like to mention what to me is still the pinnacle of the series: Sonic 3 & Knuckles. I wasn’t even able to complete the very first level!īut it hasn’t always been like that. Hey, even I still had faith in the blue blur until I recently tried myself that awful game. The poor guy has starred in a handful of horrible games in the last 5 years, with it’s Xbox 360 and PS3 next-generation Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) reboot being the most noteworthy. So it has happened to poor old Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega’s incredibly popular response to the always cheerful Super Mario. Although great, successful game series can. Now that I've heard Sega have emulated the Saturn version of Sonic R for the forthcoming Sonic Gems Collection, it makes me wonder why they didn't emulate the Saturn version of Sonic 3D.Old classics never die. Every game is emulated with such high accuracy, you'd swear your PS2 has turned into a Megadrive/Genesis! Almost everything is correct, right down to the slowdown caused when you lose loads of rings! However, the biggest thing that makes Sega deserve a pat on the back is the emulation technology used to run the games. The menus are fulfilled with videos playing the background, and the musics are awesome! When you first fire up this compilation, the first thing you'll notice is the slick presentation. That it's a near-perfect compilation! With so many other items (comics, movies etc), as well as the Megadrive/Genesis/Game Gear games, what more could you want? All in all, a fantastic buy as well as a great feeling of nostalgia! I wish more companies would do this. Don't download an emulator, buy this! They are all here for you in one complete package, with a little something extra to make this a very value priced package. If you never got a chance to play the original Sonics, this is as close as you are going to get. Although doing that would severely stretch the games since they were only designed for a TV in the first place. There's nothing that really comes to mind, although they could have upped the resolution to 1280x1024 full screen, as the game only plays at 800圆00 tops. There are also unlockable games and developer interviews. To have all of the games on 1 DVD is awesome! Each game is presented exactly as it appeared on its respective console (included are the original Genesis versions, as well as the rarer Game Gear releases) which is fantastic if you're like me and never had a chance to own one of these magnificent consoles. The Sonic Series is one of the best known game series in the world. Sonic: Mega Collection + - Alternate spelling ![]() Additionally, a Game Gear emulator was added along with six Game Gear games: The previous version had included them only in Japan. The Genesis games The Ooze and Comix Zone were now available in all regions. New to the Plus version is a save-state function, lots of new artwork, movies and comics in addition to what was on GameCube and several new games. It also has the special games created by locking Sonic & Knuckles onto the earlier Sonic games: Blue Sphere, Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. ![]() It carries over all the content of the previous version, including the following emulated Genesis games: A special extended version of the popular GameCube compilation ported for the PS2 and Xbox, Sonic Mega Collection Plus contains 20 of the most popular Sonic the Hedgehog and SEGA Genesis titles in one convenient set.
